Challengers line up for Medford offices All but one Medford city official up for re-election will be challenged this November. At the close of the filing deadline Friday, council President Sal Esquivel was uncontested for the Ward 2 seat. The posts held by Mayor Lindsay Berryman and councilmen John Michaels and Bill Moore, however, will be contested. The election is Nov. 7. A new candidate has emerged for the seat held by Councilman Curt Bennett, who announced last week he would not seek re-election to represent Ward 1. Mark Soderstrom, 44, an insurance agent and vice president of the Insurance Marketplace Inc., was the last to file for Bennett�s seat. Soderstrom is joined by Ed Chun, director of marketing for the Cascade Investment Council, and Janet Meyer, a nurse practitioner at Southern Oregon Pediatrics. In the mayor�s race, Berryman will face Susan Hand, a homemaker and former administrative assistant. Berryman was elected as the city�s first woman mayor in 1998. In Ward 3, Michaels will be challenged by Rachel Chartier, a family advocate for the Healthy Start program at the West Medford Family Center. Dennis Nielsen, a Medford planning commissioner who failed in a bid for the council in 1998, will challenge Moore for the councilman�s Ward 4 seat.
