Crusaders slip past Mustangs Scoring hadn't been Thatcher Jones' forte during his previous three years on the St. Mary's boys basketball team. This season, the senior point guard is looking to change that. Jones scored 24 points and junior Michael Fiddler poured in 27 as the Class 2A Crusaders held off Chris Jiron and Class 3A Hidden Valley, 69-62, on Tuesday. Jiron drilled seven 3-pointers and scored 30 points, but the visiting Mustangs couldn't overcome the Fiddler-Jones scoring punch. "I'm very pleased with the win," said St. Mary's coach Tim Pflug. "Our intensity was terrific, and any time you can beat a 3A school is very satisfying." Jones couldn't top Jiron's 3-point prowess but did account for five of his team's six makes from behind the arc. "To Hidden Valley's credit, they never quit," said Pflug. "Anytime we'd make a run they would get back into the game and (Jiron would) hit a 3. "I'll bet you all but two of his 3s were contested, too. He's a pure shooter." Fiddler also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and, along with teammate Brian Staver, led the Crusaders with six steals. "Michael's been hampered by a sprained wrist for the past couple of games," said Pflug. "But I'm just amazed at the kid's stamina. "I actually ran him into the ground tonight because we had some kids in foul trouble. He just never quits." St. Mary's held a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter but struggled to put the game away with a 17-of-38 effort from the foul line. The Crusaders also committed a season-high 24 turnovers. But with Jones steady at the point, St. Mary's held on and improved to 3-1. "I think Thatcher is the best point guard in the conference," said Pflug. "The past three years he hasn't been able to consistently hit the three, but he's been practicing and has really stepped up his scoring." ILLINOIS VALLEY 54, GLIDE 38 - At Cave Junction, senior forwards Daniel Houston and Beau Brown both posted double-doubles for Illinois Valley (2-3). Brown contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Houston added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Illinois Valley used a tight defense to limit the Wildcats to 11 points in the first half and led by 14 at the break. IV senior point guard Justin Graven dished out six assists. The Knights turned the ball over 13 times in the third period and had 30 for the game. Zach Tucker scored 20 points to lead four Pelicans (3-2) in double figures. Jeff Pisan added 14, while Jeff Mortenson and Nick Caleb tossed in 10 each. North Valley 6-5 sophomore post Sean Gronholm paced the Knights with 19 points. Hall hit three 3-pointers and Joe Newton scored eight of his 14 points to lead the Indians to a 23-5 advantage after the opening period. Newton also grabbed six rebounds to lead Roseburg (4-1). The 5-foot-6 junior point guard, who also dished out seven assists, shot 15-of-18 from the field and is averaging 29 points per game for the Vikings (3-0). Jared Giacomelli, who also starts at guard, added 15 points for Mazama, which struggled defensively in the first half but still managed a 53-39 lead.
