Not even a road game at defending Southern Oregon Conference champion Roseburg on Thursday could break the Black Tornado’s early season surge. Jessica Durham had 18 kills and Allanah Munson contributed 38 assists and 15 digs as North (9-1, 6-0 SOC) took down the Indians, 17-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-23, 17-15. "That was just great volleyball by both teams," said North coach Ron Beick. "We played well at crunch time and showed a lot of heart when it mattered. I’m real proud of (my team’s) effort." The turning point in the match, according to Beick, came in a Game 3 loss. Advertisement Roseburg, which fell into second play at 5-1 in conference play, jumped to a big lead but the Tornado scrambled back to make the end result closer, and gain a little momentum heading into the Game 4 victory. "(Roseburg) made some blocking adjustments in Game 3 and took out our middles," said Beick. "It was a good sign (for us) near the end of that game that we were able to close the gap and swing the momentum." In the fifth game, Erica Schultz made a key block to give North a 16-15 lead and the Indians followed with a hitting error to clinch the match for the Tornado. Lauren Berger had 10 kills and Schultz nine for North, while Kelsey Hamilton was the defensive leader with 26 digs. ASHLAND 25-22-25-25, EAGLE POINT 22-25-20-18 — At Eagle Point, Jessica Walters slammed down 21 kills to go with six aces and 16 digs as Ashland picked up its fourth SOC win against two losses. The Grizzlies rallied from a 21-17 deficit in Game 1 behind the junior Walters, who used her floater serve to score five straight points and put Ashland ahead to stay. Lindsey Stone contributed 33 assists, four kills, 14 digs and four aces, while Natalie Lefler had 15 digs for the Grizzlies. Mickie Burns led Eagle Point (2-4 SOC) with nine kills, while Jill Shaw and Shannon Richardson added eight apiece. Nicole Lucas had 34 digs for the Eagles. SOUTH MEDFORD 25-25-22-18-15, KLAMATH UNION 18-23-25-25-8 — South Medford jumped out to a two-game lead but needed a full five to finish Klamath Union off thanks to 15 service errors. The Panthers (4-2 SOC) were led by senior middle blocker Jen Mendenhall’s 15 kills and 5½ blocks, while junior outside hitter Emily Marshall had 15 digs and junior setter Lauren Koeninger had 24 assists. Junior outside hitter Audrine Beamish also served up four aces for South. The Pelicans (1-5) won the third and fourth games before a fifth-game collapse. CRATER 22-22-26-25-18, GRANTS PASS 25-25-22-24-16 — At Grants Pass, Crater dropped the first two games to Grants Pass before mounting an improbable rally. The Comets (1-5) trailed 22-15 in Game 3 but went on a 7-1 run to tie the game and eventually win. Crater received clutch performances in the decisive fifth game from Hailey Hevern (six digs), Amanda Penkala (four kills, four blocks) and Randy Salyer (eight assists). Hevern finished with 29 digs and 10 kills, Penkala added 11 kills and Salyer had 23 assists. The win pulled the Comets into a three-way tie for sixth place in the SOC. Skyline Conference PHOENIX 26-23-25-25, HENLEY 24-25-17-23 — At Klamath Falls, Phoenix defeated Henley on its home court for the second straight year but only the third time since 1986. Senior setter Shonda George had an impressive 19 kills and senior outside hitter Jessica Howard added 17 kills for the Pirates (3-0 Skyline). Ashley McArdee added 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Jenna Matchett had 10 kills and freshman Sierra Patzke had 12 assists for Henley (3-1), which had only one miss from the service line with five aces. HIDDEN VALLEY 25-25-28, ROGUE RIVER 23-13-26 — At Rogue River, Hidden Valley won a marathon third game 28-26 to earn a sweep over Rogue River. Michelle Woodall led the Chieftains in a losing effort with seven kills and six digs. The Mustangs improved to 2-2 in conference play. NORTH VALLEY 22-25-25-17-15, MAZAMA 25-16-23-25-12 — At Merlin, Randi Reed had 25 digs, nine kills and four aces to lead North Valley to a Skyline Conference win. Brandy Stromme added seven kills, Karen Arnold 21 digs, and setters Trista Morton and Ashley Parker each doled out eight assists. The Knights improved to 2-2 in conference play, while Mazama fell to 1-3.
