Editor's note: Light One Candle is an annual series sponsored by the Mail Tribune that focuses on an individual, group or agency that could use a helping hand during the holiday season. Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. A new van would help this family of eight stay the course toward recovery. The Medford parents spent years making their fractured family whole again. Clients of Medford’s Family Nurturing Center since the birth of their 18-month-old daughter, the married couple has regained custody of their other five children and anticipates a bright future. The 27-year-old father works full time while the 32-year-old mother takes college courses. Together, they graduated from parenting and addiction-treatment classes and complied with every requirement of family court and their caseworkers. They and another couple also organized a project to give back to Family Nurturing Center, which continues to support their efforts. Active in Narcotics Anonymous, they have been drug-free since their youngest child’s birth. Drugs and alcohol were the mother’s method of coping with a violent home life since her early teens. This holiday is the first she will share with all of her children under one roof. The family’s van needs new tires. But the couple worries that the vehicle, plagued by electrical issues, won’t run much longer. The children need clothing and would cherish a special gift. The 16-year-old boy wears 30/32 pants, medium shirts and size 9 shoes. He wishes for a long board. The 14- and 10-year-old girls, who love beauty products and jewelry, respectively, both wear juniors size 1 clothing. The older girl wears size 7½ shoes, the younger size 4. The 6-year-old girl wears size 5T in pants, 6T in shirts and 13 in shoes. She’s a fan of Disney’s “Frozen.” The 3-year-old boy wears size 4T clothing and size 8 shoes. He wants a wooden train track with trains. His little sister likes blocks and baby dolls. She wears 18-month-size clothing and size 3 shoes. The father needs a new pair of lightweight work boots, size 11½-12. The mother would delight in a haircut and color or manicure. To help, call Family Nurturing Center at 541-779-5242.
