I’ve also noticed a large pile of stones south of the peak. What gives? Isn’t this area a park? —Jim R., Medford Prescott Park covers most of the picturesque peak, but there’s a gravel pit right next door. A rock quarry on the southeast side of the park has been mined since at least 1956, although some neighbors recall gravel removal there going all the way back to the 1930s, past Mail Tribune stories have reported. The rock removed is primarily used in road construction. The gravel pit used to be accessed by a private road outside the park, but since 1985 the city has forged agreements with pit operators allowing rock trucks to travel through the park.
