Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 19, 2006 Grizzlies settle for split against Yreka Prep Softball YREKA, Calif. — Ashland’s hitting proved sufficient in a season-opening softball doubleheader at Yreka Saturday. But the Grizzlies’ defense proved costly in an attempt for a sweep. Ashland came back from a 4-0 deficit to defeat the Miners 9-6 in the first game, but five Grizzly errors led to a 12-9 loss in the nightcap. "We hit the ball a ton," said Ashland first-year coach Misty Potochnik, whose team collected 26 hits in the twin bill. "We made too many errors. It was definitely not our best showing, but it’s early in the year." The Grizzlies used a five-run third inning to erase the early Game 1 deficit. Bailey Hasty’s two-run homer highlighted the third-inning outburst. Back-to-back doubles by Kayla Cardoza and April Jorgensen accounted for another Ashland run in the inning. Advertisement Hasty led the 10-hit attack with a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance. Jorgensen added three hits and Sara Silbowitz had two. In the second game, freshman pitcher Bella Pribyl impressed Potochnik. Pribyl recorded nine strikeouts. Of Yreka’s 12 runs, nine were unearned. Ashland committed three errors during a six-run rally by Yreka in the fourth inning. "(Pribyl) has so much potential," said Potochnik. "She kept battling. She never hung her head. She’s a gamer." Jorgensen picked up three more hits and contributed two RBIs in the nightcap. Leadoff hitter Sam Gilbert also had three hits. "We were putting the ball in play," said Potochnik, who noted Ashland only had one strikeout in both games. "And when you do that, good things happen." Nancy Carl and Sarah Conard each went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while Casie Hinkle had two hits and Rachel Conard had three RBIs. Willingham tripled home Sarah Ruatta for the Knights’ lone run in the first game. Ruatta had three stolen bases during the twin bill. Hinkle struck out nine and gave up just three hits and one earned run in the opener. Junior shortstop Kristen Allison played spotless defense in both contests. ROGUE RIVER 2-10 BROOKINGS 1-4 — At Brookings, Karly Lusk only allowed four total hits as she picked up a pair of nonconference wins for Rogue River. Lusk gave-up one hit in the first contest and struck out five. Cas Giesbrecht had two-hits in each game with two doubles and two stolen bases for Rogue River (2-0). The Chieftains had 12 stolen bases in the second game led by Nicole Shoup’s four swiped bags.
