Mail Tribune 100, Aug. 4, 1922 By Alissa Corman Aug 04, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Aug. 4, 1922 AUTO POLO FEATURE AT COUNTY FAIR Auto polo, the thrilling field sport indulged in by expert automobile drivers in light cars equipped with a regulation polo mallet, may be one of the amusement features on the Jackson County Fair program this fall if the negotiations now under way between the directors and an auto polo troupe are consummated. It is the intention of the directors to provide a different feature amusement for each day of the fair, in addition to the regular program of races, etc. One means of providing entertainment which will be adequately taken care of each day of the exposition will be plenty of fine band music. The directors realized that regardless of how fine the exhibits and other features of the fair may be, band music is essential to keep the crowds in a holiday mood. 4,000 ACRES ARE BURNED OVER IN ASHLAND DISTRICT Ashland, Aug. 4. — A desolate looking patch of 4,000 acres or more east of town in the vicinity of the mineral springs is the result of what started as a grass fire, getting beyond control Wednesday afternoon. Property involved included acreage on the Murphy, Roman, Chapmap, McAllister and other ranches. Spreading from grass to brush, several miles of fence was also destroyed. Buildings on the Barron and Tucker ranches has a close call, while hay stacks were saved only by superhuman effort, the fire spreading to such an extent before effective aid could be summoned. It was Thursday morning before it was gotten under control. Reports vary as to the cause. One statement is that a spark from a blacksmith forge started the blaze and another that a workman dropped a red-hot iron into the grass, either report being on the assumption that the accident occurred incident to ditching operations on irrigation projects being extended throughout that territory. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The Jackson County fair is being liberally advertised by the use of automobile plates carried above the regular license tags. The first of these plates was introduced in Roseburg by J. C. Thompson of the California-Oregon Power company who says that all of the company’s cars and trucks will be so equipped in a few days. — Roseburg News Review. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
