On Saturday, Holiday will throw his name in with the elite in bodybuilding at the National Physique Committee Teen Collegiate Masters National Bodybuilding Championships in Pittsburgh. It will be only the third competition for the South Medford High graduate, who originally got into the world of bodybuilding as a senior class project. "This is pretty much the top of the line," says Holiday, 19, who will compete in the welterweight class (165 pounds). "I'm expecting the other kids to be really good at what they do." The 5-foot-7 Holiday, whose average weight teeters around 185, will be one of 40 competitors. Each participant goes through the mandatory poses and has a 60-second routine in front of the judges. Advertisement "I'm pretty confident," Holiday says. "I definitely expect to win my weight class." Holiday usually spends six to seven weeks training prior to a competition. Besides his diet, which consists of seven small meals per day consisting mainly of chicken, egg whites and vegetables, Holiday trains with Scott Knight, himself a 20-year competitor. "Scott did a great job training me for this show," says Holiday. "He's totally experienced and knows what he's doing. He's taught me a lot." Holiday trains five to six days a week, doing either cardio work or weightlifting. Even his off time while attending the University of Hawaii, where he'll soon return for his sophomore year, is conducive to the bodybuilding lifestyle. "I've made some great friends there," Holiday says. "One of my friends is into (bodybuilding), so we work out some together. Over there everybody works out. "Most of the food there is pretty much what I eat anyways. They serve lots of rice and meat." The laid-back atmosphere is also an area where Holiday thrives. "I can't wait to get back," he says. "I love it there. It's such a relaxed environment. It's a way slower pace." Holiday, a standout soccer player while at South Medford, had little trouble adjusting to the new sport in his two previous attempts. He took first in the teen division and fourth in the adult novice middleweight class at the Max Muscle Naturals bodybuilding competition held in Culver City, Calif., in March of 2005. Just three months later, Holiday again earned the championship trophy in the high school division and finished third in the 22-and-under men's junior class at the Musclemania Superbody Championships in Miami. Following his latest bid Saturday, however, Holiday hopes to take some time away from competing. "I'd kinda like to take a break after this competition," he says. "I'll probably end up doing some more later. "Who knows. I'll stick with it and see how far it takes me."
