Crater romps past Roseburg The Crater senior point guard scored a game-high 29 points and handed out eight assists as the third-ranked Comets defeated Roseburg 67-44 in a battle of previously unbeaten SOC teams. Visiting Roseburg (8-4, 5-1 SOC) rode Lindsey Heard's hot hand to an 18-14 lead at the end of the first quarter in front of an almost capacity crowd at the Crater gym. Heard, niece of Crater coach David Heard, scored 11 of her team-high 18 points in the opening period and sank a 3-pointer at the beginning of the second quarter. Then Pool took over. Pool, who has already received a scholarship to attend the University of California in the fall, scored 14 points in the second quarter as Crater turned a four-point, first-quarter deficit into a 34-25 halftime lead. "She (Pool) had control of the game offensively," coach Heard said. "She was responsible, directly or indirectly, for 47 of our 67 points." Additionally, Pool converted on all eight of her free-throw attempts. Crater's other all-star, Amy Denson, also provided significant contributions to the win. Denson scored 24 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the field, had four steals and three blocks. The Comet center also helped Crater to a 38-28 rebounding advantage with 11. "She (Denson) took care of the backboards for us," said the Crater coach. "The single thing we were worried about was rebounding because they are so much bigger than we are." Heard credited Addie Wiersma with playing her best game of the year. The Crater senior grabbed eight rebounds to go with six points. The Comets (15-1, 6-0 SOC) didn't break the game open until a 10-2 run to begin the fourth quarter gave Crater a 61-40 lead. "We gained a lot from this game," said Heard. "We were down early and fought back. We needed a game like this where we had to play all the way through."
