Email Story to a Friend June 16, 2005 U.S. Cellular to present SMART program grant The SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) program will receive an $8,582 donation from U.S. Cellular today. U.S. Cellular will join Mayor Gary Wheeler at 1 p.m. at the Medford City Council meeting to present the money to SMART, which pairs local volunteers with school children to encourage literacy development. About 2,000 phones were collected in the city of Medford, according to Tori Harms, U.S. Cellular spokesperson. She said a company that refurbishes cell phones paid $4,291 for the used phones, and U.S. Cellular matched that amount. The program raised more than $90,000 nationwide through donations of more than 42,000 used wireless phones. U.S. Cellular also will present Medford’s Central Library with a donation of 50 new books for its children’s collection. Children from the Sarah Corson Childcare and Learning Center in Medford will receive books, also.
