Sprague went on to win the game 4-3 in eight innings. Mail Tribune / Jim Craven SOC teams heat up tourney North Medford and South Medford fare well in Invitational, while Crater gets a day off The North Medford High softball team had to work a little extra on Day 1 of the 20th annual North Medford Invitational tournament Monday at Fagone Field. The Black Tornado suffered a 4-3, eight-inning loss to Sprague in its season opener, then found itself in another extra-inning affair later Monday when it pulled out a 5-3 victory over Barlow. North Medford coach Brent Barry obviously would have preferred a pair of wins, but considering the Tornado had to replace five starters from last season’s team that went 27-3, he wasn’t displeased by Monday’s performance. "Our lack of experience showed up today in certain ways," said Barry, noting the four errors his team committed against Sprague, "but the girls stuck together and pulled out a win." Laura Tarkon’s two-run, first-inning single gave North Medford a quick lead over Sprague, but the Salem-based team fought back to score once in the third and twice in the sixth to take a 3-2 advantage. North Medford tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Mallorie Hoover doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Kailey Bostwick and scored on Tara Sikes’ single. But the Olympians, who beat North Medford in a Class 4A state quarterfinals game last year, won the game in the eighth on an RBI single by catcher Lydia Holm. Advertisement Hoover pitched a strong game against Barlow, scattering five hits, striking out three and walking only one while going the distance. Bostwick drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth that put the Tornado ahead to stay. Tarkon generated three hits against Barlow while Sikes and Darcy Cordell contributed two each. In other tournament games Monday, it was Roseburg 5, North Eugene 3; Barlow 9, Grants Pass 0; Grants Pass 2, Gresham 0; South Salem 4, Century 0; South Salem 7, Roseburg 0; Milwaukie 4, Century 0; Milwaukie 5, Churchill 0; and Churchill 6, Sprague 1. Crater had its scheduled game Monday against Sheldon canceled. The Comets will be in action today against Crescent Valley and Churchill at Crater High. SOUTH MEDFORD WINS PAIR — South Medford remained undefeated on the season with tournament wins over North Eugene and Southridge at Fagone Field. The Panthers (8-0) defeated the Highlanders 3-0, then downed last year’s Class 4A state runner-up Southridge 12-2. Panther junior Jackie Chaplin had a big day at the plate. Chaplin had four hits in the two games, including two doubles, a triple and a home run. Chaplin’s solo home run in the sixth inning against North Eugene was her fourth of the year. South sophomore pitcher Jill Jeter blanked North Eugene on three hits and struck out eight. Southridge roughed up South Medford ace Jen Mendenhall for two runs on two hits and a walk in the first inning. But the junior right-hander blanked the Skyhawks on one hit the rest of the way. The Panthers scored four runs to erase a 2-0 deficit in the third. Marissa Towry’s two-run single sparked the rally. South ended the game in the fifth inning with eight runs. Chaplin’s leadoff triple opened the rally and Jackie Fulton’s two-run double completed the outburst.
