During the three-hour "targeted pedestrian safety enforcement" operation, Medford police handed out 32 tickets for failure to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk and at least another dozen for various other violations, according to a Medford news release. The tickets were given between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday. The operation was funded by the Oregon Department of Transportation and was intended to raise awareness through education and enforcement of pedestrian right of way laws. If you're fuzzy on the rules, here they are: In intersections not controlled by stoplights, Oregon law requires that you stop and remain stopped when a pedestrian is walking in your lane of traffic or the adjacent lane. In intersections that are controlled by a traffic light, you must stop and remain stopped when a pedestrian is within your lane or 6 feet of the adjacent lane. Oregon law also prohibits you from passing a stopped vehicle at a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection if it's stopped to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway. Violation of these laws carry a $260 fine. Police issued four warnings for failure to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk; five tickets for failure to use a seat belt; four tickets for driving while using a cellphone; two tickets for failure to have a driver's license; one ticket for driving while suspended; one ticket for driving while uninsured; and 11 tickets and warnings for various registration and equipment violations.
