Hidden Valley knocks off Phoenix boys, 3-0 GRANTS PASS - With eight returning starters back, Phoenix was confident in its District 6 season-opening boys soccer match against defending Class 3A state champion Hidden Valley. But it was the less-experienced Mustangs who downed the Pirates 3-0 Tuesday at the Josephine County Fairgrounds. "We thought we would have the upper hand going into tonight," Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner said. "We played a little soft. We didn't have our 'A' game." Hidden Valley broke a scoreless tie with two goals within one minute of each other in the second half. Dylan Borta got the first of his two goals at the 63rd minute. Borta placed a one-touch volley into the net from 10 yards off a crossing pass from Rem Everet. The Mustangs quickly struck again when goalkeeper Tim VanderStoel booted a kick all the way to the Pirates' 18, and Darin McGlothlin converted from there. Hidden Valley completed the scoring when Everet drew Pirates' goalie Daniel Kieffer toward him, then provided a feed to an open Borta near the far post. The Mustangs received a strong effort from Irie Spann, who returned to the lineup for the first time this season because of an ankle injury. "He (Spann) made the biggest difference at center midfield," Hidden Valley coach Charlie Seal said. "Everything goes through him. He controlled things." VanderStoel was also a difference-maker for the Mustangs. "He stopped a couple I thought were goals for Phoenix," said Seal. Hidden Valley outshot Phoenix, 18-11. "The Mustangs showed up with more heart than the Pirates," said Flenner. "That hurt more than anything." ST. MARY'S 2, ROGUE RIVER 1 - Freshman Duncan MacDiarmid had one goal and one assist and Peter Staver controlled the midfield as the Crusaders slipped past Rogue River in the District 6 opener for both schools. MacDiarmid scored three minutes into the second half off an assist from Matt Burt to break a scoreless tie. Six minutes later, the Crusaders took a 2-0 lead when Matt Bladek scored on a header pass from MacDiarmid. Rogue River (0-1) got its goal from Travis Yawn on an assist from Jesse O'Gara. Greg Gradwell had a strong game in goal for St. Mary's. Girls NORTH VALLEY 0, COTTAGE GROVE 0 - At Merlin, goalkeeper Karen Allen and the rest of the North Valley defense held Cottage Grove to eight shots on goal. Despite stellar efforts from offensive midfielders Amber Abbott and Galina Zial, the Knights (0-2-2) couldn't find the net among their 17 shots on goal. Bethany Laney came off the bench and performed well for North Valley. ST. MARY'S 3, GLIDE 1 - At Glide, Emily Smith scored two first-half goals to help St. Mary's take a 3-0 lead at the break in the non-conference match. Margo Chamberlain got the Crusaders started with a goal on a corner kick at 6:25 into the game. Two minutes later, Smith tallied off an assist from Jessica Grant. Smith added her second goal at 19:16, with Kara Schnoes providing the assist. Annie Maurer played four different positions for the Crusaders. Maurer performed as goalkeeper for the first 20 minutes before going to center midfield the remainder of the opening half. In the second half, Maurer played both fullback and forward. St. Mary's (1-0) dominated play, as evidenced by a 13-1 advantage in shots on goal.
