The Mustangs (43-7) used 11 hits and four different pitchers to coast past the Titans 9-0 on Sunday at Miles Field. The scheduled doubleheader was trimmed to one nine inning game due to a shortage of pitching arms for Emerald Valley. The arms the Titans brought didn’t stand much of a chance, despite the Mustangs posting a zero in the hit column until the fourth inning. Advertisement Evan McArthur went 3-for-5 and picked up Medford’s first base-knock in the fourth inning with a one-out, solo home run to kick-start the offense. Reese Lamson keyed a three-run fifth inning with a two-run triple and Rob Folsom tacked two more runs on the board in the sixth with a two-RBI single. Lamson finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Dustin Butler added two hits and scored a pair of runs. Richard Goosmann ran his pitching record to 5-1 after working the third and fourth innings and Brett Timmerman notched his first save of the season. The Mustangs return to Area 4 play today with a 6 p.m. doubleheader at Klamath Falls. Babe Ruth 15-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Roseburg, the Medford all-star team used solid pitching and took advantage of seven Josephine County errors to claim a five-inning, 13-0 victory in the championship game of the six-team tournament. With the win, Medford advances to the Northwest Regional Tournament held in Vancouver, Wash., starting Thursday. Ryan Odell tossed two innings and Rick Imhausen completed the shutout in the final three frames as the game ended after five due to the 10-run mercy rule. Medford produced seven hits, but took advantage of some sloppy defense by Josephine County, which defeated Roseburg 5-1 earlier on Sunday to advance to the title game. Tony Salamone and Chris Helman each had two hits to pace Medford at the plate, while Zack Wilson drove in two runs. Softball NORTH MEDFORD WINS TOURNAMENT — At Newberg, the North Medford Black Tornado fastpitch team won five games over a two-day period to capture the 12-team Cooper Classic championship on Sunday. North Medford (44-9) cruised through pool play then routed the Dallas Magic 14-1 in the title game. During the two-day tournament, the Black Tornado had 63 hits, scored 71 runs, while Medford gave up just four hits and yielded no earned runs. Taylor Schmidt, Gretchen Owens, Mariann DeClerck and Kandice Hallett anchored the pitching staff. Offensively, the Tornado was led by Emily Morrill’s 10-for-13 effort, while teammates Owens (9-for-15), DeClerck (11-for-14 with a home run), Kira Vandergriff (6-for-11 with a homer), Breanna Williams (6-for-11) and Katie Bunmgarner (6-for-8 with a home run) also helped out at the plate.
