COLLEGE FOOTBALL Oregon's Helfrich ready to turn page Comment By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 20, 2015 @ 6:35 pm By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 20, 2015 @ 6:35 pm » Social News EUGENE — Mark Helfrich is admittedly having a difficult time closing the book on the 2014 season. It was a compelling read with an unhappy ending. Oregon’s 42-20 defeat to Ohio State in the national championship game was an opportunity lost. Then two days after the Ducks’ remarkable run ended on the big stage at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Marcus Mariota made the decision to chase his NFL dreams. The program’s first Heisman Trophy winner led Helfrich’s second Oregon team to the Pac-12 championship and the historic Rose Bowl win over Florida State in the College Football Playoff semifinals. “Marcus is a guy that obviously has left an indelible mark on this program in a lot of ways and somebody that will continue to motivate us on a daily basis,” Helfrich said during a press conference on Monday at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex. “At the same time, we have to flush it and turn the page so to speak.” Helfrich isn’t sure if Oregon will eventually retire Mariota’s No. 8 or erect a statue in his honor, but quipped: “If you have a chisel, that would probably come in handy.” Someone will have to follow the legend. Jeff Lockie has a head start, at least in terms of experience, on Morgan Mahalak, Ty Griffin and Travis Waller. “I think he should certainly look at it that way,” Helfrich said of Mariota’s backup the past two seasons. “Whenever you’re replacing somebody at any position, there’s a short-term and a long-term way to evaluate things. In a short-term, absolutely, that (experience) should be a strength of his.” Mahalak, who will be a redshirt freshman, and Griffin, a sophomore-to-be who sat out after transferring from Georgia Tech, had a chance to study Mariota last season while also quarterbacking the scout team. “Those guys, I think, did an average to above average job of staying dialed in,” Helfrich said. “A huge step for them is this winter and early spring, before spring football, is getting their mind right to truly compete, and to be in as best a position from a mental standpoint, a confidence standpoint, to just go out and play.” Waller, a 2015 recruit who plans to enroll early at UO, could also start challenging Lockie for the starting job this spring. Walk-on Taylor Alie, the third-string quarterback and holder, will get some reps as he did last spring. Oregon, which should be strong on the offensive line and elite at the skill positions in 2015, could also be an attractive landing spot for Ohio State’s Braxton Miller or another graduate transfer eligible to play next season. “We’re going to exhaust every path to find the right guy, the right fit,” Helfrich said. “But we certainly believe in who’s on campus and what’s to come.” Junior defensive end Arik Armstead has left the program for the NFL draft. The Ducks must also replace key seniors on offense (Jake Fisher, Hroniss Grasu, Hamani Stevens, Keanon Lowe) and defense (Tony Washington, Derrick Malone, Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Troy Hill, Erick Dargan). “That’s something that is one of those things you try to catalyze and spur a little bit,” Helfrich said of finding new leadership this offseason. “But you also can’t fabricate it.” Despite all of the success in 2014, Helfrich said he anticipates having his entire staff back next season. With two weeks remaining until national signing day, the staff must put the Ohio State game in the rear-view mirror as Oregon finishes up recruiting and prepares for the post-Mariota era. “That’s been a blessing and a curse,” Helfrich said. “You have to flush it and move on to a certain extent, but initially right after that is tough. Our players will get a little time to relax and move on to their next phase and get focused on academics and self-improvement in the winter, which are huge. “I need to definitely take my own advice a bit in that regard.” By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 20, 2015 @ 6:35 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Fantasy Favorites, Lineup Picks for Super Bowl XLIX Jan. 22, 2015 at 9:00 am Fantasy Breakdown, Stat Predictions for Super Bowl Jan. 20, 2015 at 1:00 pm Fantasy Outlook for Raiders Stars Jan. 20, 2015 at 7:13 am DraftKings Fantasy Guide for Packers vs. Seahawks Jan. 16, 2015 at 10:00 am DraftKings Fantasy Guide for Colts vs. Patriots Jan. 16, 2015 at 10:00 am League Guide to Conference Championship Weekend Jan. 16, 2015 at 7:26 am calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
