Black Tornado coasts past Grizz ASHLAND - The game was close only until Gabe Burchfiel took control. Burchfiel, North Medford's 6-foot-4 senior post, scored 13 of his season-high 27 points in the third quarter as the Black Tornado pulled away for a 69-48 boys basketball win over Ashland Wednesday. North (4-6, 1-0 Southern Oregon Conference) led 28-22 at halftime, then outscored the Grizzlies by 10 in the third quarter and five in the fourth. "He worked himself and got inside, about 8 feet in," said Ashland coach John Skinner of Burchfiel. "He had an excellent game. They were doing a lot of screening, and we weren't bumping the screens. He got wide-open looks, mostly. They just physically outbattled us." Burchfiel also grabbed 16 rebounds and made 10 of 12 field goals, including one 3-pointer, and 6 of 7 free throws. The game started out in bruising fashion, with nine free throws attempted in the first quarter by both teams. Neither offense got untracked in the second quarter. "If you play tough defense and keep the other team from scoring," said Skinner, "you have to come down and score at the other end." Ashland managed only six points in the second. Three other North Medford players reached double figures. Zach Taylor had 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals, Aaron Barlow 11 points and six assists and Zach Rettmann 11 points. Ashland, which got 11 points from Lance Streng, dropped to 4-5, 0-1 in the SOC.
