LOCAL ROUNDUP Defending champ Dix upset in Big Al's Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 19, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Jul. 19, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News ASHLAND — Defending champion John Dix of Ashland was defeated in the semifinals of the men's open singles division at the 40th Big Al's Tennis Tournament Saturday. Austin Kische of Yreka took out the top-seeded Dix in a 10-point match tiebreaker after the pair split the opening two sets, 5-7, 6-1. "It was back and forth in the tiebreaker," said tournament director Kelly Baker. "It came down to 7-8 in the tiebreaker and (Kische) won three of the last four points. The kid (Kische) came up with some great shots." Dix was attempting to reach the finals for the third straight year. "(Kische) hit the ball a little bigger than John," said Baker. "John is so crafty and smart. John made him earn it." Kische will face second-seeded Michael Gooding in today's final at 1:30 p.m. at Hunter Park. All finals will be played at Hunter Park beginning at 8 a.m. Gooding of Ashland defeated Alan Peterson, 6-4, 6-4, in the other semifinal. Unseeded Elizabeth Stevens, an eighth-grader from Portland, charged into the women's open singles finals with a straight set victory against Kali Curtis, 6-0, 6-0. "(Stevens) is the real deal," said Baker. "She moves great and is so composed. She's playing at a college level." Stevens will face No. 1 seed McKenzie Hilmer, who defeated Ashley Knecht, 6-2, 6-4. Hilmer is a former North Medford High standout and a two-time Big Al's champion. In men's open doubles, the top two seeds advanced into today's finals. Chris Atzet of Merlin and Evan Schleining of Medford, the No. 1 seed, defeated Zachary Carter of Roseburg and Kische, 6-3, 6-3. The father-and-son duo of Hal and Tanner Borg took second-seeded Gooding and Peter Warren of Ashland to a tiebreaker before falling. WCL Baseball MEDFORD 4, KITSAP 1 : Medford starting pitcher Jackson Bertsch limited Kitsap to five hits and one run in 6⅔ innings and the Rogues took advantage of some BlueJackets miscues to win the rubber match of a three-game WCL series at Harry & David Field. Bertsch struck out five and walked three for the Rogues (15-21), with D.J. Wilson pitching two scoreless innings of relief for a save. Nathan Etheridge singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the second inning for Medford. The Rogues built a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Tim Lichty slapped a two-out single and, after a walk to Tony Roque, Derron Davis followed with an RBI single that Roque also scored on thanks to a Kitsap (13-23) error. Kyle Nobach drew a bases-loaded walk against Medford reliever Gabe Genter in the seventh, but the Rogues answered in the bottom half of the frame as Billy Fredrick reached on an error and then Andrew Martinez later reached on an error, allowing Fredrick to score. American Legion AAA MEDFORD 12-1, ROSEBURG 6-2 : At Roseburg, despite the split at Legion Field the Medford Mustangs clinched the Area 4 championship. In Game 1, Bryce Rogan was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Tate Cowden 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Mustangs (30-11, 11-3 Area 4). Jared Evans and Jordan Ragan both went 2-for-4 with two runs and Micah Brown was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs. Brown pounded a bases-clearing triple in the seventh inning with two outs. In the second game, Medford’s only run came in the first inning when Cowden opened with a double and scored two outs later on Rogan’s RBI single. Evans collected two hits for the Mustangs The Doc Stewart’s got two unearned runs in the third inning off Colton Westfall, who struck out four and walked two.
