By Kris Henry Mail Tribune June 20. 2015 5:43PM North stars highlight all-state list North Medford senior pitcher Colton Westfall earned first-team recognition to highlight the list of honors recently after the Class 6A and 4A all-state baseball and softball teams were announced. Westfall went 8-2 overall with a 1.13 ERA in the regular season to pace the Black Tornado, which had four players recognized overall on the 6A baseball all-state team. Westfall, who was the winning pitcher in the 2014 state championship game, was a second-team all-state pick one year ago and batted .367 with 22 runs and 13 RBIs this past season. North Medford senior third baseman Josh Berman was also a repeat honoree, earning a second-team nod this year after making it on the honorable mention list in 2014. The third baseman batted .413 with 18 runs and 25 RBIs this past regular season. Senior right fielder Jared Evans (.375, 15 runs, 20 RBIs) and senior pitcher Jordan Ragan (7-3, 1.07 ERA) joined Berman on the second team for North Medford. Grants Pass junior shortstop Easton Bents was an honorable mention selection. Sheldon third baseman Taylor Frost was named 6A baseball player of the year and the Irish’s Stan Manley was named coach of the year, while Tualatin’s Karter Cook was 6A pitcher of the year. South Medford sophomore pitcher Pat Moore paced the local contingent on the 6A softball all-state list, earning second-team acclaim after posting a 21-5 record and 0.94 ERA during the regular season. Moore also batted .489 with 26 runs and 14 RBIs. Panthers teammate Hannah Newman gained a third-team nod after the senior first baseman batted .535 with 22 runs and 38 RBIs. Southwest Conference champion North Medford placed four players on the 6A honorable mention list, led by returning all-state selection Grace Jovanovic. The senior center fielder, who was on the first team last year, battled injuries but still batted .392 with 17 runs and nine RBIs this past season. Also on the honorable mention list were North Medford junior pitcher Sarah Thomas (15-2, 2.20 ERA), junior catcher Tra Kucera (.444, nine runs, 30 RBIs) and senior first baseman Janelle Rodgers (.425, 19 runs, 34 RBIs). In other local 6A softball honors, Grants Pass senior pitcher Amy Robinson and senior outfielder were named to the all-state first team and Cavers senior infielder Nicole Godwin was a second-team selection. Sprague’s Jessie Isham was named 6A softball player of the year, while Tualatin’s Emily Sorem was pitcher of the year and Jenna Wilson coach of the year. At the 4A level, Phoenix senior pitcher Aaron Hutchinson received second-team recognition on the all-state baseball team while Hidden Valley had four players honored in senior pitcher Michael Hults (first team), senior catcher McKinnon Bennett (second team), senior outfielder Coleman Davis (honorable mention) and junior infielder Roman Fretz (honorable mention). Sisters senior Justin Harrer was named 4A baseball player of the year, while Scappoose’s Robert Medley was coach of the year. In 4A softball, North Valley junior Amber Dechenne was named honorable mention all-state as an outfielder. Banks junior Makenna Partain earned 4A player of the year honors, while McLoughlin’s Colette Robert was pitcher of the year and Nicole Christian coach of the year. Class 5A and 3A all-state lists have not been released.
