The 24-year-old woman was the second of the Frohnmayers' three daughtersto die from complications associated with Fanconi anemia. Katie Frohnmayer,12, died from a stroke in 1991; Amy Frohnmayer, 10, has been diagnosed withthe disease but so far has shown no symptoms. Two sons, Mark, 23, and Jonathan,12, do not have Fanconi anemia. Kirsten Frohnmayer had battled health problems since January 1995, whenshe was diagnosed with leukemia, a cancer of the blood system that frequentlyafflicts victims of Fanconi anemia. Her thirst for life produced medical miracles that made all whoknew her believe that she could continue to prevail through sheer determination,her parents said in a written statement. She entered Sacred Heart Hospital late Tuesday following a series oflung problems. Memorial service arrangements were pending. The family suggested donationsbe made to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund in Eugene. The Frohnmayers formedthe nonprofit organization. Kirsten Frohnmayer was diagnosed with Fanconi anemia in 1983. The diseaseafflicts only 2,000 to 3,000 people in the United States. It frequentlyleads to aplastic anemia, the failure of bone marrow to produce red bloodcells to carry oxygen, white blood cells to fight infection and plateletsnecessary to prevent spontaneous bleeding. She was a senior at Stanford University when she was diagnosed with leukemia.She underwent a bone marrow transplant at the University of Minnesota Hospitaland Clinic, where she battled effects of a stroke brought on when a catheterwas mistakenly inserted in an artery instead of a vein. She returned to graduate Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford, and later traveledto Milan, Italy, for therapy. A fungal infection in her lung interruptedthe treatment. She had fungal lesions removed from her lung last year inMinnesota, where she underwent two rounds of chemotherapy. Doctors found the leukemia was in remission and she had been living withher parents in Eugene. Dave Frohnmayer is a former Oregon attorney general who ran as a Republicanfor governor in 1990. He was University of Oregon law dean before beingnamed the university's 15th president in 1995.
