Yreka turns back Pirates bid, 66-52 YREKA, Calif. Daring anyone else to beat them, the Phoenix boys basketball team packed its defense in tight down low to thwart University of Oregon-bound Matt Short in Tuesdays non-conference tilt. Unfortunately for the Pirates, the strategy backfired as Kyle Zimbelman drained three 3-pointers and scored 13 of his team-high 15 points as Yreka used a 28-13 run in the first quarter to bury Phoenix 66-52. "Weve been playing pretty well coming out of the chute lately," said Yreka coach Mike Carpine, "and tonight we really put it all together." After scrapping the zone defense for a man-to-man attack, Phoenix made a run at Yreka but couldnt quite shed the first-half deficit. The Miners led 43-23 at halftime. "In the second half we didnt have any intensity but we hung in there," said Carpine. "They fought back hard in the second half but I think they just got down too much too early." Sean Murphy paced Phoenix with 18 points thanks largely to four 3-pointers, while the 7-foot Short managed only eight points but pulled down 12 rebounds for Yreka (5-2).
