Today in the News: DOJ report reveals biased policing in Ferguson A report released by the Department of Justice today says that officers working for the police department in Ferguson, Missouri — the city where teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed by an officer last year — routinely engaged in racially biased law enforcement. The report found that while black people accounted for around 67 percent of the city’s population, black people comprised 85 percent of drivers stopped by the police, and 90 percent of all people issued tickets. The report also showed that black residents were twice as likely to have their cars searched, but 26 less likely to have contraband. QUOTE OF NOTE “He is in a state of shock from the story and needs time to deal with all the pressure from the media,” said Salem al-Hashash , the attorney for Jasem Emwazi, father of the man formerly known as “Jihadi John,” speaking to the media today. Kuwait-born British citizen Mohammad Emwazi was revealed by The Washington Post to be the masked man behind the beheadings of several hostages held by the Islamic State. His family has since relocated from London to Kuwait. Authorities have confirmed that the younger Emwazi’s family members are not being considered suspects.
