October 08. 2014 2:00AM Letters to the Editor, Oct. 8 Save the humans It never ends. The zealots of the religion of climate change continue to freak out over supposed impending doom. Based on what, more computer models like the ones that predicted catastrophe that never materialized? Satellite data has recently shown that temperatures have been flat for 17 years and may even be cooling. In addition, NASA satellite data shows an increase in Antarctic ice. Despite this scientific data, still more hysteria. "Using data compiled from Christmas Bird Count and North American Breeding Survey records ..." Have you ever tried to count wild birds? Just try it. Go outside right now and try to count the birds in your yard, much less North America. These are very vague estimates, and only designed to give an idea of actual data. Despite this, barred owls will be killed, murdered by the government, to supposedly save the spotted owl. Government absurdity at its finest. And the very editors of this struggling newspaper perpetuating the hysteria. I don't buy it, and neither should you. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon's major industry, wood products, continues to decline, decimating public safety funding. The birds live. Public safety dies. I say, save the humans. Rick Nelson, Medford Conservative? Not really Conservatives are the first to want to use our military to assert our self-interests around the world. Conservatives want to reduce or eliminate laws and regulations designed to preserve the earth's environment. Conservatives want to exploit energy and mineral reserves now rather than save for future generations. Conservatives want no restrictions on development. Conservatives want to reduce or eliminate the social safety net. Think of what it means to conserve. These policies are about being aggressive in world affairs, using up our resources at the expense of future generations and allowing the unfortunate and poor to ... whatever. They are about the wealthy keeping the wealth. Ironically, "conservative" policies are Darwinian, allowing that it is only natural that the strongest will rightly survive and the weak shall perish. My conclusion is that there is little truly conservative about "conservatives" and that, in a very basic way, they really believe in Darwin's theory of evolution after all. Let's be accurate and honest and use another word to name this "me first" political philosophy. I can think of several better labels. Can you? Daniel Hamnett, Ashland Vote for jobs Oregon, under the supervision of Governor Kitzhaber, currently suffers from a 7.2 percent unemployment rate. Other Democrats govern in Vermont, New Hampshire, Minnesota and Hawaii, where unemployment averages 4.3 percent. Kitzhaber underperforms. Within Oregon, Southern Oregon unemployment is 10 percent, whereas Portland area averages under 6 percent. Senator Bates (our local state senator) has not brought needed jobs to Southern Oregon. Republican leadership in North and South Dakota, Utah and Nebraska have lowered unemployment below 3.8 percent in these states. Dave Dotterrer, Republican, a fellow Ashland High graduate in 1969, has promised job creation as his top priority. Let's give Dave a chance with our vote. We need job growth here in Southern Oregon!
