Defense rests as Panthers nip Grizz South Medford's defense wasn't stifling, but it was strong enough to produce an 82-66 Southern Oregon Conference victory on Friday night. "It was obviously not a defensive battle," said Panthers coach Dennis Murphy. "The first half was definitely wide open." At halftime, the Panthers held a narrow lead, 45-39, after lukewarm defense allowed Ashland to make 15 of 22 field goals. In the second half, South (9-5, 4-1 SOC) stepped up its defensive intensity, allowing Ashland only 10 field goals in 23 attempts. "We played harder and a little smarter in the second half," said Murphy. Steve Hilgendorf led South with 17 points. The senior point guard went 8-of-8 from the free throw line, 3-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc and added seven assists. "One of the biggest factors was our post play," said Murphy. South's post players combined for 15-of-21 shooting in the game. ASHLAND (66) -- Kirpatrick 17, Beugli 6, Allred 0, Zundel 14, Streng 0, Pavilionis 11, Potocki 5, Cate 8, Shields 5, Ehlers 0.
