Iron unkind as SOU men's hoopsters come up short against Humboldt St. ARCATA, Calif. - Despite only standing 6-foot-5, Humboldt State's Fred Hooks was a man among boys on Tuesday. The forward scored 28 points on 12-of-19 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Humboldt past the Southern Oregon University men's basketball team, 85-74. The Raiders trimmed a 16-point halftime deficit to five in the closing minutes but missed several free throws and couldn't find an answer for Hooks. "We couldn't do anything with him (Hooks)," said SOU coach Brian McDermott. "He's not very big but we just didn't have an answer to what he was doing to us." Moses Olson came off the bench to score 10 points and hit two 3-pointers to help spark the second-half surge by SOU. "The kids made a nice run and a couple of guys hit some shots off the bench," said McDermott. "But we once again struggled at the foul line." The Raiders (3-2) shot just 15-of-26 from the line. Three days earlier in a loss to Willamette, they made only 7-of-17 from the charity stripe. T.J. Caughell and Brandon Knudsen each added 10 points for Southern Oregon, which travels to Menlo College this weekend for a tournament.
