Updated 7:10 a.m. Tuesday The standoff between police and an armed man with reported mental health issues continues in west Medford today. Ross Lane and Sweet Road, streets previously closed during the standoff's initial hours, have both reopened, Medford police reported. Argyle Court, where the man has reportedly barricaded himself in a duplex, remains closed. The standoff has been ongoing since about 3:45 p.m. Monday, March 16. We will continue to update as information becomes available. 9:10 p.m. Monday Police were in a lengthy standoff late Monday night as they waited out an armed man with apparent mental health issues who barricaded himself alone in a west Medford residence Monday afternoon, triggering the closure of several area streets and the evacuation of a handful of nearby homes, authorities said. North Ross Lane between McAndrews Road and Maple Court, as well as the side streets between them, were closed to traffic since 3:45 p.m. while Medford police tried to end the standoff with the unidentified man in a duplex in the 300 block of Argyle Court, police said. The residences were evacuated amid reports the man had several firearms in the residence, including a hunting rifle, Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. A family member notified police at 3:36 p.m. that the man's mental health status was declining over recent days and he appeared to be a danger to himself and others, Budreau said. Police shared texts and have established telephone contact with the man, who deep into the night refused to step outside and surrender, said Budreau, who added that establishing contact is the first step in peacefully resolving standoffs such as this one. This is the third time in three days police have been called to this residence over the man's mental health states, but police were unable to contact him on the previous two calls, Budreau said.
