Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 2, 2005 classical britt announces schedule Rimsky-Korsakov’s "Sheherazade," an evening of "Opera’s Greatest Hits" and panoramic photography choreographed to music highlight the 44th Britt Classical Festival, set for Aug. 4-20 on the Britt hillside in Jacksonville. Vivaldi’s "The Four Seasons," Dvorak’s Violin Concerto, the return of the Magic Circle Mime Company and a tribute to American composers round out the season, announced Monday by Music Director and Conductor Peter Bay. Tickets go on sale to Britt members on Dec. 1, with discounts of $2 off each ticket until Feb. 15. Call the box office at 773-6077 or visit brittfest.org. Tickets go on sale to the public May 8. Opening the festival at 8 p.m. Aug. 4 is "Exotic Tales," featuring Van Cliburn gold medalist Jon Nakamatsu in Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Rimsky-Korsakov’s sensuous "Sheherazade" and Strauss’ "Dance of the Seven Veils" complete the program. Tickets are $36 and $33 for reserved seating, $22 for lawn, and $11 for children up to age 12. An opening gala champagne picnic is planned at 6 p.m. for an extra $24. On Aug. 5, Sarah Chang will perform Vivaldi’s "The Four Seasons." Chang, 25, began studying the violin at age 4, was immediately enrolled at Juilliard, and by age 8 had performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Advertisement Margaret Evans, professor of music at Southern Oregon University, will perform the Organ Symphony of Saint-Saens during the program, which will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $37 and $34 reserved, $23 lawn, and $11 for children. Hilary Hahn performs Dvorak’s dramatic Violin Concerto starting at 8 p.m. Aug. 11. The Grammy Award-winning 25-year-old violinist was named "America’s Best" young classical musician by Time magazine in 2001. The Britt Orchestra also will perform Mozart’s Symphony No. 25 ("Haffner") and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9. A pre-concert talk by John McGrosso, violinist with the Arianna String Quartet, is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are $37 and $34 reserved, $23 lawn, and $11 for children. "Opera’s Greatest Hits" is planned for 8 p.m. Aug. 12, featuring arias, duets and quartets by Puccini, Mozart and other greats sung by soprano Mela Dailey, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Root, tenor Robert Breault and bass-baritone Wayne Tigges. Tickets are $34 and $31 reserved, $21 lawn, $11 for children. At 8 p.m. Aug. 18, three large screens will be suspended over the orchestra as James Westwater shows his panoramic photography choreographed to excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake," Vaughn Williams’ "Serenade to Music," Wagner’s "Siegfried’s Rhine Journey" from "Gotterdammerung" and Copland’s "Appalachian Spring Suite." Westwater plans a pre-concert talk at 7 p.m. Tickets are $33 and $30 reserved, $21 lawn, $11 children. The Magic Circle Mime Company returns at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 for Mozart’s 250th birthday celebration and Britt’s annual family concert. Tickets are $24 and $21 reserved, $16 lawn and side section benches, $6 for children. The season wraps up at 8 p.m. Aug. 20 with "Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue," a tribute to the music of American composers Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin featuring pianist James Chubet. Highlights include "Rhapsody in Blue" and the "Symphonic Dances" from "West Side Story." Tickets are $33 and $30 reserved, $21 lawn, $11 children. The Arianna String Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. July 31 at the Southern Oregon University Music Recital Hall as part of the Britt Classical Festival. Tickets are $22 and $19 reserved, $15 for students and seniors. The full season of the Britt Festivals will be announced March 17.
