Crater to play in championship game at tourney PLEASANTON, Calif. - Crater got off to a sluggish start but came on strong to gain a spot in the championship game of the girls eight-team Amador Basketball Classic Friday. Crater overcame an early 10-point deficit to register a 66-45 semifinal victory over John F. Kennedy of Richmond, Calif. The second-ranked Comets (3-0) face host Amador in the championship at 7:30 tonight. Amador (5-0) defeated Crater by three points for the title last year. It was the Comets' only defeat until losing to Oregon City in the Class 4A state championship game. Crater made eight turnovers in the opening quarter and trailed 18-10. After making the first basket of the second period, JFK was outscored 22-7 the rest of the half. Sarah Yager's 3-point basket at the buzzer gave the Comets a 33-27 halftime lead. "We just started taking better care of the ball," said Crater coach David Heard, whose Comets only committed six more turnovers the remainder of the game. "We worked hard on the defensive end and rebounded better." Sarah Pool exploded for 25 points for the Comets. The senior guard was 11 of 17 from the field. Pool added eight assists and five rebounds. "She (Pool) scored off the dribble a lot on their man-to-man," said Heard. "They couldn't deal with her tonight." Crater center Amy Denson had 19 points and seven rebounds. Whitney Black provided the Comets a boost off the bench. The sophomore guard converted on 4 of 5 field goals, including two treys. The Comets bottled up JFK's most dangerous player Deidra Chatman, a 6-foot-6 post who has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Virginia. Chatman finished with 10 points. "We paid special attention to her with two girls in our zone," said Heard, "and tried to keep her off the boards." Another positive factor for Crater was the 28 turnovers it forced. "Our press wore them down and forced them into a lot of mistakes," said Heard. CRATER (66) - Black 12, Yager 8, Kinney 0, Wiersma 2, Anhorn 0, Pool 25, Maartense 0, LeBel 0, Huntley 0, K.
