A convincing, 58-40 boys basketball win over league-leading Phoenix did the trick. We needed something like this to get us back in the hunt, North Valley coach Rob Boye said. If you are going to make a move, you've got to beat teams ahead of you in the standings. The Knights played just ahead of Phoenix for 24 minutes, taking a 38-32 lead into the fourth quarter. But after a sluggish third quarter, in which the two teams combined for 10 points, North Valley won the fourth period, 20-8. I challenged the team to play better defense in the second half than in the first, Boye said. And they came away with a 12-point half. Senior post Andy Shannon led the Knights with 18 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Senior point guard Anthony Spain scored 16 points and had five assists. — Quentin Tisch added 11 points and Josh Makepeace three blocks to go with nine points. We just defended our home court ' which is what you are supposed to do, Boye said. We know that we still have to go there (to Phoenix). They are a tough, physical team. The Pirates (6-9, 4-1 Skyline) shot only 17 percent from the field. Phoenix trailed by four points at halftime, then got outscored 14-5 in the third quarter as the Knights built a 36-23 lead. Phoenix senior guard Ashley McCarty had 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Jaclyn Unruh registered a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds.
