Monies come from different pockets Could you tell me why any time our county is running short of money they always want to lay off the sheriff's deputies? But for some reason there seems to be money to purchase the old Safeway store. Am I missing something here? -- James J., Talent The county, which expects a shortfall of $1.2 million to $1.8 million in the coming fiscal year, is not proposing laying off any sheriff's deputies as a result of the budget problem, according to County Administrator Sue Slack. She said the money the county proposes to spend for the old Safeway building is money the corrections program has saved for a number of years. The majority of it comes from a state fund that's earmarked for corrections efforts only. Additionally, the corrections department will save $80,000 a year on rent by buying the building, Slack said.
