Butte Falls storms past Days Creek DAYS CREEK - Tommy Lunsford and Issac Stephenson ran wild as Butte Falls blasted Skyline A League preseason football favorite Days Creek, 58-8, Friday. The Wolves (0-2, 0-2 Sky A), who were picked to win the league in a preseason coaches poll, had no defense for the Loggers' running game, which accounted for 353 yards. The game ended with four minutes remaining in the third quarter on the 45-point mercy rule when quarterback Nick Rodgers connected with Chris Copeland for a 45-yard touchdown pass. That completed a 38-point third quarter for the Loggers. Butte Falls led 20-8 at halftime. "We scored real quick in the third quarter," said Butte Falls coach Jack Brown. "We were able to run the ends real well." Lunsford scored the Loggers' first two touchdowns on runs of 14 and 38 yards as Butte Falls took a 12-0 lead. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior running back finished with 164 yards on 19 carries and three TDs. "He (Lunsford) did his normal job," Brown said. "He just goes out and runs hard." Stephenson, who rotates with Rodgers at quarterback and halfback, rushed 10 times for 127 yards. Stephenson scored two rushing TDs and one on a 55-yard interception return in the third quarter. Butte Falls limited the Wolves to 139 yards in offense. Rodgers and Stephenson, who play middle linebacker and defensive back, respectively, excelled on defense, along with junior end Tony Beals and sophomore guard B.J. Parker, who led the Loggers in tackles. The Loggers (2-0, 2-0 Sky A) have a bye next week, then play host Powers on Sept. 28. MARY'S 44, PROSPECT 14 - At Prospect, generating 391 yards on the ground, the Crusaders rolled to their first win of the season by scoring 30 unanswered points between the second and third quarters. Ruben Cotti carried 10 times for 164 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown run to start the scoring and a 60-yard TD scamper in the third. Brian Kirkpatrick rushed five times for 78 yards and scored TDs of 25 and 37 yards. John Wing gained 64 yards on 13 carries and converted three two-point conversion runs for the Crusaders. Linebacker Warren Cooper blocked a punt and recorded four sacks for St. Mary's (1-1). Linebacker Colin Grant and special-teams coverage man John Leonis also stood out for the Crusaders. Prospect scored its first TD off a 69-yard pass from Nolan Lenderman to Danny Skull. Eric Smith hauled in a 44-yard pass from Skull to close out the Cougars' scoring.
