Area boxers earn titles at regional CHEYENNE, Wyo, -- Five members of the Medford Bulldogs Boxing Club earned championships during the Silver Gloves Regional Tournament Sunday, qualifying for the national tournament Lenexa, Kan., Feb. 4-7. Three of the Bulldog boxers advanced unopposed from the regional event. Jeremy Withrow (178 pound, 14-15 age division), Alex Trujillo (175, 12-13) and Boone Wyatt (100, 12-13) went unchallenged in the regional competition, automatically advancing the the national tournament. Wyatt, with a 26-2 record, competed in the national event last year and is ranked fifth heading into this year's competition. Winning championship bouts to advance to the nationals were Troy Wohosky (106, 12-13) and Mike Wilson (201, 14-15). Both fifth-ranked Wohosky and second-ranked Wilson also made the trip to the nationals last year. At regionals Wohosky defeated Chad Montgomery from Helena, Mont., in the championship bout, earning his 17th victory. He hasn't suffered a loss in more than a year. Wilson defeated David Hernandez of Rock Springs, Wyo., in his championship bout for his 16th victory. The Bulldogs took two other boxers to the regional tournament, Austin Hernandez (85, 12-13) brought home a consolation championship and teammate Gilberto Ramirez (132, 14-15) lost in the semifinals before withdrawing from the tournament. Hernandez lost to Josh Grott of Kuna, Idaho, in a semifinal bout and went on to defeat Orlando Hernandez of Caldwell, Idaho for the consolation championship. Ramirez's semifinal loss was to Brian Whiting of Kuna. Three Cougar Boxers, Manuel Gonzalez (70, 10-11), Omar Ibarra (65, 10-11) and Homer Gonzalez (147, 14-15) and a boxer from Burns also advanced to the national competition as Oregon recorded the most qualifiers with eight. Idaho advanced the second most followed by Wyoming. Boxing fans can catch the Bulldogs in action at the Medford Double Tree Inn, 7 p.m. Jan 30 in their "Super Bout Saturday" card. Clubs from Oregon, California will compete in the event which will also include seniors. Tickets can be purchased at Joseph Winans Furniture.
