I notice that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hasn’t altered the water releases from Lost Creek Lake in a while, holding steady at 1,050 cubic feet per second. When they do increase it, how long does it take the water to travel downstream in the Rogue River? Is there a gauge or chart for that? — T.T., email submission It’s interesting that you brought this up, because we at Since You Asked Central are real water nerds who also keep close tabs on the flows out of Lost Creek Lake and what the mighty Rogue River looks like on any given day. That’s most true in winter, when storms can send flows rising and falling, and the Corps of Engineers typically follows suit with raising or lowering Lost Creek Lake’s outflows, with a keen eye on reducing flooding troubles. The Corps has studied how long it takes for water to reach the various stream gauges in the Rogue after it’s released from Lost Creek Lake. It takes lake water about four hours to reach Dodge Bridge, where the U.S. Geological Survey has a stream gauge on the Highway 234 bridge. It takes about two more hours to reach the old Gold Ray Dam site, where a gauge remains in the Rogue. So that’s six hours to travel 31 river miles from the lake to that gauge. It takes about four more hours to travel the 13 river miles from the old dam site to Grants Pass.
