Tuesday’s 5-1 victory over Eagle Point was another step toward that goal for the Comets, who evened their record at 8-8 with the Southern Oregon Conference win. "I think it’s just a matter of maturing," said Powell, whose team returned only three starters and carries just three seniors. "They are young, and the more games they get under their belts, the better they’re going to look. I think we’re becoming more consistent." Charlie Reina was 2-for-4 and Cory Staniforth went 2-for-2 with two RBIs to lead Crater (11-10 overall). Senior pitcher Jeff Weiss tossed a four-hitter and struck out 11 to help the Comets register their third win in four games. "He’s been working the Tuesday spot," Powell said, "and at least in the last two or three games has really come through for us. He’s been pretty solid." Josh Surgeon tied the game on a sacrifice fly and, after Tyler Schmidt was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Staniforth capped the surge with a two-run single. Jesse Bailey added another run-scoring hit in the fifth to put Crater ahead 4-1. That was all the help Weiss would need, as he improved to 3-1. Crater is now two games behind Grants Pass in the race for the SOC’s fourth and final state playoff berth. "We just try and prepare the best we can for each game," Powell said. "We try not to let the kids worry about what the other teams are doing and just take it one game at a time." Eagle Point fell to 5-16 overall and 2-14 in the SOC with the loss. Along with his 10 strikeouts, Keitzman went 4-for-4 at the plate, had two RBIs and scored two runs. Aaron Buxton had a two-run triple in the fifth inning for the Indians (17-4, 15-1 SOC) before they closed out the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
