Crater suffers first SOC defeat to Indians ROSEBURG -- Senior guards Pat Anderson and Joe Gonzales provided the scoring punch and Roseburg came up with a big defensive effort to hand Crater its first Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball loss on Tuesday night. Anderson and Gonzales combined for 34 points as the Indians defeated Crater 58-41. Roseburg (7-8, 4-2 SOC) put a major emphasis on stopping Crater's main scoring threats -- Matt Brown, Mike Jacobs and 6-foot-8 post Matt Harthun. Brown got 18 points, but Jacobs and Harthun were held to 14 between them. "We gave Crater a lot of different looks defensively," Roseburg coach Mike Pardon said, "and I thought that helped us. You can never let yourself lose sight of Matt Brown. We were aware of him all night." The Indians led by five points at halftime, then outscored Crater (11-5, 5-1 SOC) 34-20 after the break. Roseburg used a deliberate offense to slow the game's pace against the more experienced Comets. "We had a hard time matching up with them so we didn't want to give them many opportunities at the basket," said Pardon. "The big thing for us is we're starting to click as a team. We're starting to understand our roles." CRATER (41) -- Brown 18, Harthun 10, Jacobs 4, Korthals 4, Haas 2, Smith 1, Foster 1, Darnell 1, Price 0, Strate 0, Wangle 0, Campbell 0.
