Already playing with a relatively young squad — nine are freshmen or sophomores — the Black Tornado needed a last-minute tweak to pull out a 5-3 victory over visiting Ashland in a windy Southern Oregon Conference match Thursday. North (5-0, 3-0 SOC) was without half of its No. 1 doubles team when McKenzie Hilmer fell ill prior to the match at Varsity Courts. The late scratch forced Tornado coach Dale Jensen to move Hilmer’s playing partner, Lauren Wilson, to No. 1 singles, something she hasn’t done much of this season. Wilson lost to Kayla Moyse, 6-1, 6-2, but the Tornado’s doubles squads came through with a 4-0 sweep to preserve the team victory. Advertisement "I told (Wilson) she’s gotta do it," said Jensen of moving half of his state runner-up doubles tandem to singles. "She did fine, though. It was actually a pretty close match. "There’s a lot of sickness going around, but the girls stepped it up." The high winds were a factor for both teams. "It was really blustery out there," said Jensen. "It’s good for the kids. It makes them concentrate even more." In one of the more competitive matches, North’s Sarah Pendergast rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Briana Lescher in No. 2 singles. Pendergast fought back from a 5-2 hole in the third game to pull out the win. "That was an important match," Jensen said. "Sarah’s an extremely bright girl. Boys Golf EAGLE POINT INVITATIONAL — At Eagle Point, Ashland and Roseburg tied for first place, while South Medford took third at the nine-team event. Ashland’s Ben Wright and Roseburg’s Marc Goodell each shot 75 at the par-72 course to tie for medalist honors. Wright was even heading into the 17th hole, but struggled on the last two to finish 3 over par.
