Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 23, 2005 Cascade Christian coasts to crown The Cascade Christian girls basketball team completed a nice run with the championship of its own Christmas Classic tournament Thursday. Still, in the wake of a 59-37 title-clinching win over Rogue River at The Pavilion, coach Loren King wasn’t sure how good the Challengers (6-3) are. "We’re playing pretty well, but we’re going to find out pretty quick how good we are when we get up to Oakland," he said of another tournament next week. "It’ll be a little sterner test. I’m not sure how good we are. I think we’re under the radar a little in the SCL (Southern Cascade League)." Based on their recent play — the Challengers won three tourney games by an average of 29 points — they figure to contend for a playoff spot when league begins after the holidays. Against Rogue River, tourney most valuable player Sarah Brown scored 16 points, Katie O’Brien 15 and Alyssa Teterud 10 to lead the way. Cascade Christian built a 35-16 halftime lead and cruised home. Advertisement "Right now, I think our defense is a little ahead of our offense," said King. "We’re playing well with nine or 10 kids, so our strength right now is our depth." As is often the case, opponents that don’t match up in numbers begin to wear down in the third quarter. It happened Thursday. "It’s a huge factor because it’s a positive mental thing also," said King. Juniors Teterud and Brittany Hallmark combined for 13 rebounds, and each had five at the offensive end. "Those are stats we haven’t had many of," said King. "That’s a big plus." O’Brien also had five assists and six steals and made the all-tournament team, along with teammate Amanda Duchien. HOSANNA CHRISTIAN 34, BUTTE FALLS 27 — Butte Falls couldn’t overcome 35 turnovers in the loss at the Cascade Christian Christmas Classic. The Loggers (3-7) climbed to within four points in the fourth quarter but committed three straight turnovers down the stretch. Kyndi Sutfin scored 11 points to lead Butte Falls, while Ceci Myers had 13 rebounds and four assists en route to selection on the all-tournament team. BUTTE FALLS (27) — S. Wright 5, K. The Cavers trailed 13-7 after one period but went on a 20-6 run in the second quarter to take a 27-19 lead at halftime. Cameron swished a 3-point basket and had six points during the GP spree. Cameron hit 6 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the host Pirates at bay. Heather Porter scored 14 and Hannah Smith had 13 to lead Marshfield. GRANTS PASS (52) — Cameron 15, As. Stearns finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Fiegi had 11 points and 10 boards. The Pelicans (5-3) got a scare when starting post Breezie Coke injured her arm in the first quarter. The 6-foot-1 senior sat out the rest of the contest and will miss the next four to five days with a minor sprain.
