Predictably, the match was close throughout and went to five games before St. Mary’s squeezed out a 25-23, 28-26, 20-25, 22-25, 15-12 victory. Senior setter Libby Trum came through in the clutch for the Crusaders, serving the final three points of the match after Game 5 was tied at 12-all. Senior middle Christina Vaninetti produced 14 kills and four blocks, and sophomore middle Brittany Farrer had a huge night defensively with 16 blocks. Farrer also had nine kills. "Even though we won the first two games, it was not a comfortable situation," said St. Mary’s coach James Joy, whose team moved to 2-0 in the SCL and overall. "They battled us right to the end." Senior middle Kayleen Conley led Cascade Christian with seven kills and 12 blocks, and Janee Johnson and Natalie Dicus had nine kills each. Johnson sparked the Challengers in their Game 4 victory, serving the final five points after the teams were tied at 20. In the decisive fifth game, Cascade Christian had an 11-9 lead only to watch Trum fuel a St. Mary’s comeback that won the match. "I was really proud of the way we fought back," Cascade Christian coach Susan Gmur said. "It’s not easy to be in the position we were in and come back like we did. We just fell a little short." Defensively, Kathryn Zielony and Melissa Anderson contributed 34 and 32 digs, respectively, for St. Mary’s. Cascade Christian dropped to 1-1 in the SCL and 2-3 overall. HIDDEN VALLEY 25-25-25, MAZAMA 13-13-22 — At Murphy, Hidden Valley ended a 45-match conference losing streak that dated back to 1998. The Mustangs’ last beat Illinois Valley. Hidden Valley capitalized on 15 aces and a well-rounded performance from a variety of players. Junior outside Sam Masiak had five kills, eight digs and eight aces. Mustang middle blockers Lindsay Craig had seven kills and Nicolette Churchwell four kills and four blocks. Senior setter Laura Miller had 16 assists and six digs. ROGUE RIVER 25-26-25, NORTH VALLEY 19-24-15 — At Rogue River, Katie Glasscock registered 11 kills and six blocks, and Madi Biggs served 10 straight points in Game 3 with five aces to power Rogue River to the Skyline Conference victory. Senior setter Ashleigh Artoff had 30 assists for the winners. Elaina Renius had 16 kills to pace North Valley, which fell to 2-1 in league play and 5-3 overall. LAKEVIEW 25-25-25, ILLINOIS VALLEY 10-12-16 — At Lakeview, top-ranked Lakeview (8-1, 4-0 Skyline) was led by returning state player of the year Megan Albertson. The 5-foot-11 senior setter provided the Honkers with 14 points on nine kills, three blocks and two aces. Albertson also added 16 assists. Lakeview middle hitter Nicki Pardue had six kills. HENLEY 25-25-25, PHOENIX 22-20-12 — At Phoenix, second-ranked Henley put on a fundamental clinic that wore the Pirates down in the Skyline Conference match. Strong blocking and defense, keyed by middles Staci Maupin and Michelle Klaja spurred the Hornets. The Pirates, 5-3 overall, are 1-2 in the Skyline, their losses coming to the top two ranked teams in the state. For Phoenix, Joni Mahon had eight kills, Tiffany McCarty six digs, Tiffany Ross six kills and two blocks and Kelly Meredith five kills and four blocks. BUTTE FALLS 25-25-25, PROSPECT 18-11-15 — At Prospect, Butte Falls middle Cassy Bartel hit at nearly an 80-percent clip, converting 7-of-9, and Stephanie Hewitt served eight aces and went on a long run to all but close Game 3 in the Skyline A League match. Bartel served eight straight points in the finale before Asia Million finished out the last three. Also for Butte Falls (5-1, 3-0 Skyline A), Million contributed 10 digs and setters Brianna Smeltz and Krystle Rowley had six assists each.
