Tellers at the Washington Federal branch at 600 N. Biddle Road notified police at 4:21 p.m. of the robbery of their branch after the gunman made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to the Medford Police Department. Witnesses described the robber as a white male in his 40s, about 6 feet tall, wearing dark clothes, a camouflage bandana over his head, large glasses possibly with a fake nose and a fake black beard down to his waist, police reported. "It was big and black, and witnesses described it as a ZZ Top beard," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said, referring to the 1980s-90s rock band whose two front men sported such beards. A handful of witnesses told police after the robbery that the suspect was wearing that beard and loitering outside of the branch for several minutes prior to the robbery, Budreau said. He carried a grey or black backpack and the handgun was described as silver, police said. The man fled on foot from the Washington Federal branch at the intersection of Biddle Road and Stevens Street and disappeared into the darkness, police said. No shots were fired and no one was injured, police said. Medford police had a perimeter set up around the bank's neighborhood Monday evening in search of the suspect.
