I read in one of my old diaries that the Mail Tribune had an article on March 5, 1950 about a "sea monster" found in Diamond Lake. Would anyone know what kind of "monster" it turned out to be? — Dorothy E., Shady Cove We dug deep in the morgue, Dorothy, and unearthed some of the answers about the sea monster that tickled the fancy of Mail Tribune readers in March 1950. It wasn’t Diamond Lake, but Delake — what is now Lincoln City — where a 22-foot hairy monster washed ashore and "and the proud townspeople chained it to a piling," the MT reported. Advertisement It had soft, white flesh and one Delaker "stuffed his arm into the creature’s ‘mouth’ up to the elbow without learning anything particularly interesting," the MT crooned March 6. Seagulls refused to feed on "Jughead," as the carcass became known, and by mid-March the body came to smell. So they doused it with gas and oil, then burned Jughead. An Oregon State University biologist said chemical tests showed that Jughead was a huge mass of whale blubber.
