Chieftains' defense key to triumph ROGUE RIVER - The defensive-minded Rogue River Chieftains came out with a dominant effort to defeat Yreka, Calif., 15-10, 15-10, in non-conference volleyball Monday. Junior middles Angela Winfrey and Tessa Myers were the defensive leaders for Rogue River, posting eight blocks apiece. "They both did a great job sealing the outside and blocking their middle hitters," said first-year Rogue River head coach Amber Goodwin. Juniors Katie Glasscock and Madi Biggs aided the outstanding defense by combining on 12 digs and five kills. Junior outside hitter Kristy Frederick served seven straight points while setter Ashleigh Artoff, also a junior, had seven blocks. Biggs also served seven straight points. As a team the Chieftains (3-2, 2-2 Skyline) missed only three serves for the match. Another junior, Alex Dean, chipped in with five kills. Girls Soccer MARIST 4, NORTH VALLEY 0 - At Eugene, Kristen Rice scored two goals to lead Marist to the non-conference win. Clare Schwallie tallied two assists for Marist, which put up 37 shots on goal. Water Polo SOUTH MEDFORD WINS - At Eugene, senior Emily Schwendener scored six goals to lead the Panthers to a 15-10 victory over North Medford to salvage an otherwise rough weekend. The Panthers finsihed the Eugene trip at 1-2, including a 15-8 loss to Marist and a 15-6 defeat to Cottage Grove. Freshman Andrea Mytinger notched four goals for the Panthers. The Black Tornado was led by Katie Lawson's six goals. In the three games, Schwendener tallied 15 goals.
