Mail Tribune / Andrew Mariman Roseburg ends Ashland’s reign By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune ASHLAND — The Ashland boys swim team made a mad "Dash" at a third straight Southern Oregon Conference title Saturday at the Southern Oregon University pool. And while Dash King, the Grizzlies’ sophomore sensation, won two events and helped in a relay victory, Ashland fell just short of repeating as SOC champion. Roseburg returned to the winner’s circle after a two-year hiatus by slipping past the Grizzlies — 241 points to Ashland’s 240 — for the boys title at the district meet. North Medford was third with 204 points, Grants Pass fourth at 140, South Medford fifth with 119 and Crater sixth at 114. In the girls meet, Roseburg cruised to its 16th consecutive league title with 367 points, while South Medford was a distant second with 223. North Medford took third with 209, Grants Pass was fourth at 170 and Crater finished fifth with 118. King will be joined at the state meet by teammate Ben Dawson, who claimed the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:12.37. Advertisement Each event winner automatically qualifies for the state meet at Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis Friday and Saturday. Other competitors could receive wild-card berths, which will be determined in the next couple days. King nailed down a win in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.86 and fought off a highly competitive field in the 100 free to triumph with a personal-best 49.93. The 100 free field included Crater’s Michael Heckert, Roseburg’s Carl Wieland and Ashland teammate Corey Thomas. All three, along with King, were separated by less than a second in their preliminary times. "It was the fastest field in probably a decade," said King. "I’ve been wanting 49 (seconds) for a long time. Pretty much the whole year, I’ve been at 51." King also swam the anchor leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay that closed out the meet and helped Ashland inch closer to Roseburg. The Grizzlies’ winning time of 3:23.77 just eclipsed Roseburg (3:24.53), but the Indians needed only the second-place finish to lock up the team crown. "I had absolutely no doubt in my mind we were going to win that relay," said first-year Ashland coach Suha Tokman. "There’s something different about these Ashland kids, something magical. They’re not effected by things going bad. "I had an absolute ball coaching them this year." The season included plenty of obstacles for the Grizzlies. Tokman took over after Ashland could not land a coach in the off-season. The 38-year local coaching wizard, who also coaches at Superior Athletic Club, left his house at 5 a.m. most mornings and didn’t arrive home sometimes until 11:30 p.m. "It was a real drain on me," he said. To compound matters for Tokman and the Grizzlies, the SOU pool — Ashland’s practice and meet facility — broke down during a three-week span in January, leaving the team high and dry for that period. "We essentially shut it down during those three weeks," said Tokman. "We lost workouts because of that. "There aren’t many teams that stop swimming for three weeks and come out like we did." South Medford had its groundbreaking moment Saturday when Ben Beecher became the first Panther boy swimmer to qualify for state in at least seven years. Beecher knocked two seconds off his all-time best with a mark of 2:12.41 in the 200 individual medley. "I was so happy," said the senior. "I wanted to stay focused and concentrate on just what I was doing, not where the guys around me were. "This feels really great, ya know?" Added Panther coach Rich Hobbins: "I’ve been here seven years and he’s the first boy to go. Ben’s always been close, so it’s nice to see him finally make it." Panther freshman Kelsey Hoeper edged out longtime friend Anya Martinez of Crater to win the 200 free in 2:01.74. "Anya and I are real good friends," said Hoeper of her Superior Stingrays’ club teammate. "It’s pretty cool. I’m only a freshman, like everyone keeps telling me." Hoeper also swam a leg on the winning 200 free relay squad, which got a big boost from anchor swimmer Jamie Buckley to climb back and win the event in 1:44.28. "I’m just so stoked for the girls," said Hobbins. "The relay was great. And for the team to finish second to a team like Roseburg is almost like winning. I’m real impressed." Martinez bounced back from her slim defeat in the 200 free to win comfortably in the 500 free with a time of 5:30.50. The freshman suffered a slight asthma attack after the 200 but regrouped for her next race. "I think the 500 is easier for me because it’s less of a sprint," Martinez said. "I knew the 500 was my last chance (to go to state). For the 200, I just wanted to touch 1-2 with Kelsey. I was happy she won." North Medford had one individual state qualifier in Stephanie Cendejas. The junior held off Roseburg’s Brittany Groves to win the 100 backstroke in 1:04.88. The Black Tornado boys, who entered the district meet unbeaten in SOC duals, qualified for state in just one event — the 200 free relay with a time of 1:32.90. "It was a tough day," said North coach Barbara Houck. "Still, there were a lot of good times. The guys relay team was great." Roseburg brought to the meet a league-high 41 competitors and came away with nine individual wins. Eric Saylor led the Indians with victories in the boys 100 butterfly (54.84) and 100 back (56.24). Christine O’Neill scored wins in the girls 100 breaststroke (1:07.54) and 100 fly (1:01.91).
