A Saturday night carjacking at a Roseburg Red Robin turned into a police pursuit that extended into a neighboring county and left a man seriously injured from gunshot wounds. An occupied child’s car seat, commercial vehicle and an Oregon State Police patrol car were also struck by bullets during the pursuit. Police originally responded to the carjacking at 5:30 p.m., according to an OSP news release. Police arrived on scene and learned that a suspect had fled in another vehicle. Another suspect, 31-year-old Jose Lopez-Jovel from El Salvador, had been left behind following the original carjacking, and was arrested. Police later located the vehicle driven by suspect Matthew Anthony Fanelli, a 30-year-old New Mexico resident wanted as a suspected in what police called a “multi-state crime spree,” and pursued it. Fanelli reportedly attempted to elude by heading south on Interstate 5. During the pursuit, Fanelli fired a gun several times, with the bullets striking the occupied child’s seat, commercial vehicle and OSP patrol car. The child in the car seat was not injured, according to Capt Tim Fox of Oregon State Police. The patrol car was disabled after it was struck. Police in pursuit lost sight of Fanelli’s car in Josephine County. Fanelli attempted to carjack another vehicle at a home on Pickett Creek Road, northwest of Grants Pass, as a male and female couple were arriving home, police said. Fanelli shot and injured the man and assaulted the woman, but was not able to steal their car. The status of both injured parties was unavailable. Fanelli fled again and was later apprehended after his vehicle became disabled. OSP suspects Fanelli of being part of a “multi-state crime spree of violent criminal activity,” according to the release. A Google search shows he is wanted by police in Colorado Springs for firing multiple shots outside a strip club and for violating his probation in New Mexico. Motorists traveling on I-5 during the pursuit are asked to check their vehicles for firearm damage. Fanelli remains in the Josephine County Jail, and Lopez-Jovel is held in the Douglas County Jail on multiple out of state warrants.
