Qwest Dex is mailing out 166,884 inserts to every home and business for its Medford, Ashland and surrounding area customers in an attempt to remedy omissions discovered in March. The newly published Qwest Dex phone books for use through March 2004 lack 54 government listings for the cities of Medford and Central Point. Among the numbers omitted are the non-emergency numbers for the Medford Police Department. JACNET and 911 are the only MPD numbers listed, and 911 dispatchers have reported a lot more non-emergency calls. Paula Gibson, manager of Medford Central Communications (CCOM) said roughly 10 extra calls per day came in to CCOM in March. They receive more than 400 per day. "They don’t know where to call so they call the only number given," Gibson said. The problem began when Medford and Central Point recently changed telephone service providers. "When there’s a change in service providers, there’s an opportunity for listings to get dropped," said Jo Lynn Barnicoat-Thomas, regional sales manager for Qwest Dex. While Qwest is paying for the printing and mailing of the 5-by-11-inch cardstock inserts, she said that cost will not be passed on to customers. "The company will absorb this internally; this is not something that will be passed along in rates," she said. "I think it’s probably the best they can do at this point," said Barbara Madruga, Medford Technical Services Department project manager. She hopes residents recognize the insert when it arrives. "It’s going to look like a piece of junk mail, but it’s going to say ‘Important’," she said, adding that the contents will be explained on the envelope. The city also is looking into producing fliers to insert in water bills or other public service announcements. Free phone book CD-ROMs will be available in mid-April, complete with all the numbers, and can be picked up at Qwest Dex Inc., 1345 Center Drive, Suite A, Medford. Department listings also are available at www.ci.medford.or.us and www.qwestdex.com on the Web.
