Mail Tribune 100, Nov. 28, 1922 By Alissa Corman Nov 28, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Nov. 28, 1922 FANS CERTAIN TO GET A THRILL AT THE NAT TONIGHT Twenty-two rounds of boxing, each round of which promises to be a dandy, will be featured at the Nat smoker tonight. Fighting Johnny Carlson and Kid Tulsey, San Francisco fighter, will head the card in an eight rounds engagement which has prospects of being a torrid affair. Both Johnny and Tulsey are in tip-top shape and there is no reason why they should not put on a good show. As a semi-windup, Battling Frick and Kid Meadows will mix for six rounds. These two boys fought a draw at the Nat last fall which will be remembered for a long time here. Both are clever, hard working fighters and their contribution to tonight’s card promises to be mighty interesting. Joe Walters has been showing a great deal of class lately and he will meet an unknown boy in tonight’s program. This unknown scrapper, it is rumored, is far better than Burnie Burnett, the Ashland boy, who was scheduled to appear with Joe tonight, and those who run down to the Nat this evening are assured a real surprise. Another good preliminary will complete the card, one of the best prepared for Medford fans in many moons. Martin Bowers is in charge of the fistic festivities, which assures a big evening of enjoyment for those who attend. REESE BAUGHMAN WILL PLAY IN THE ASHLAND CONTEST Coach Eddie Durno of the local high school football squad announces that Reese Baughman, Medford halfback, is feeling fine and is impatient for the whistle Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, which will start the biggest football game of the year in southern Oregon. The Medford men, as the expression goes, are all “rarin’ to go” and are in the best of condition for the deciding contest of the southern Oregon football season. Every student in the high school is full of enthusiasm and excited anticipation regarding the game and instructors find it harder each day to keep the minds of the students on classwork. Reports from Ashland state that Clark, one of Ashland’s most valuable backfield men, who has been out all season because of injuries, has fully recovered and will be in the Ashland lineup Thursday. Coach Hughes and the entire city of Ashland are determined to win the contest. It is understood that for the past ten days the men on the football squad have heard nothing but football, morning periods being used for lectures on that sport and afternoon periods being taken up with actual practice. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
