With Ashley Franko on first base in the bottom of the eighth in a scoreless quarterfinal-round Class 4A state softball playoff game, Rounsaville rolled the dice. The freshman Franko scored all the way from first on Brin Tamblin’s double to right as unranked Grants Pass defeated No. 6 Barlow, 1-0. The Cavers (21-8) advance to the state semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Salem against Sprague, a 1-0 winner over North Medford. Advertisement Franko reached base on an infield single with one out to set up the game-winning run. "We hadn’t been able to get many kids on base all day long," said Rounsaville. "We knew we had to make things happen." With Franko running, Rounsaville at first thought she was going to get doubled up on Tamblin’s smash to right. But once the ball cleared the outfielder’s head, Rounsaville had no doubts what to do. "In that situation, there was no way I was going to hold her up," said Rounsaville. "We were going to try to win it right there." Grants Pass all-star pitcher Jessica Morton (19-5) and Barlow’s Samantha Stockfleth both threw extremely effective. Morton uncharacteristically walked four to go with 10 strikeouts and allowed two hits. Stockfleth struck out six and surrendered five hits. Morton flirted with danger by walking the leadoff hitter in three innings. "That is something she rarely does," said Rounsaville. "She got caught up in the moment." Grants Pass shortstop Justine Cerda and third baseman Jenny Austin anchored the error-free defense for Grants Pass. "We just hung in there and hung in there and made some great defensive plays to hold them from scoring," said Rounsaville. "If you can hang around long enough something can happen."
