PHOENIX - Crater High's wrestling team crowned nine individual champions and romped over the field in dual-meet competition to win the Phoenix Invitational on Friday night. The Comets cruised past Douglas (63-13), Grants Pass (56-15), South Medford (70-12) and Phoenix (46-27). Three freshman standouts - 103-pound Bryson Gutches, 135-pound Chase Maloney and 160-pound Ron Lee - were among the Crater champions. Kyle Marci (125), Nate Gipson (130), Jeremy McLaughlin (140), Josh King (145), Rudy Ramirez (152) and Chris Dearmon (275) also took home titles for the Comets. Phoenix claimed the other five titles with 189-pound Brian Murphy and 215-pound Greg Brown looking particularly impressive. In dual meets, the Pirates went 4-1, with their only loss coming against Crater. "We wrestled them (Crater) pretty tough, but six of our kids got pinned, and that's too many," Phoenix assistant coach Joe Hagler said. "When you're on the bottom, you've got to be like a screaming cat. You've got to have some extra fight in you, and we didn't." EAGLE POINT WINS TOURNEY - At Newberg, Eagle Point knocked off host Newberg 39-29 in the championship match of a dual-meet tournament. Earlier in the day, the Eagles defeated West Linn, 47-14, and Crook County, 34-24. Joe Lewis (119), Morgan Edenstrom (145), Jason Adams (152) and Nick Smith (275) all went 3-0 for the Eagles. Juan Knapp, seeing his first action in nearly two years after getting seriously injured in a car wreck that killed his parents and sister, notched a big victory against Crook County. With the Eagles trailing the Cowboys 24-22, Knapp pinned Stephen French to give EP a 28-24 advantage. Eagle Point heavyweight Nick Smith followed with a pin over Jared Zeigler that accounted for the final 34-24 tally. Eagle Point is host to Crater in a Southern Oregon Conference dual meet Wednesday.
