Why Ian Somerhalder Calls Technology a "Disease" " And How He Plans to Fix It When Ian Somerhalder isn't running around murdering people as Damon Salvatore on ... The actor often uses his social media accounts to raise awareness of environmental issues and the work of his own foundation . But in a new interview with CNET , Somerhalder reveals he's also extremely wary of the power technology holds over our society. "The amazing thing about the tech world, when you look at, say, social networking and social media, is that they allow us to transfer information literally at the snap of a finger," Somerhalder says. "However, we've become so reliant on tech that we no longer rely on each other. "When you look down at your phone and it says 3G [service], and you say, 'Oh, my God, it's just 3G,' that is a disease. That is a 21st-century disease," Somerhalder continues. "That is not a good thing that we get so impatient. That trickles down to how impatient we are with our animals, with our kids, with our teachers, with people in traffic." Vampire Diaries : Ian Somerhalder has some requirements for Damon's future love interest Despite his misgivings, Somerhalder is a huge fan of technology. He merely wants to help build the next generation of people to use tech in a more balanced way. "I live for tech. I live for it," Somerhalder says. "It's the future. I just want to humanize tech, and I want tech to humanize us." Somerhalder is also excited about how advancements in technology, such as self-driving, can help benefit the environment. But he's nervous about the dangers rushing into new tech too quickly - particularly when he's hoping to start a family soon. "I'm also so aware of how tech fails," Somerhalder says. "I just got married, and we want to have children relatively soon. I'm just thinking about being at work and my wife being on the way to the set with our kid or kids and dogs in the car at a stoplight totally aware of what's going on. And some unmanned car is coming by and there's a glitch in the system or there's a firmware issue or there's a satellite issue. Anything new like that is a bit scary." Want more CNET Magazine?
