Munson fuels Klamath Union past Crater CENTRAL POINT � It�s no secret that the Klamath Union High volleyball team bases its offensive attack around middle blocker Kaylene Munson. And the team�s only senior came through Tuesday night at Crater High. Munson had 22 kills, six blocks and eight digs to pace the Pelicans to a 15-12, 15-13 victory over the Comets in the Southern Oregon Conference opener for both teams. "She�s their offense � she�s big and tough to stop," Crater coach Leaf Jensen said. Lorisa Bliss added seven kills and three blocks and Maggie Fisher had 30 assists for Klamath Union, which improved its overall record to 6-1. Crater played without starting setter Crystal Galdrige, who was sidelined with a sprained ankle. "I felt like they were a little bit out of sync without her," Klamath Union coach Malcolm Munson said, "and that was to our advantage." Even so, the Comets roared to an 11-4 lead in the second game before Klamath mounted a comeback. Senior Janell Sapienza had eight kills and sophomore Erin Kinney added six for the Comets. NORTH MEDFORD 15-15, EAGLE POINT 9-4 � At Eagle Point, North Medford dominated the net behind the play of Jill Carrigan, Kara Hwang, Kendra Mitchell and Chaley Higgins. Carrigan paced North with nine kills, while Mitchell added eight. The Black Tornado ended with an excellent .424 overall hitting percentage. North senior setter Kaci Maldonado provided 26 assists and Hwang led the team with nine digs. For Eagle Point, senior outside hitter Brynna Jacobson had five kills, while Kara Stuart and Beverly Gonsalves contributed four each. Sophomore Aubrey Harrington led the Eagles with 13 assists and sophomore defensive specialist Jamie Williams served well. ROSEBURG 15-15, GRANTS PASS 4-8 � At Roseburg, Megan Morley and Shannon Burmeister and Lacy Fullerton led Roseburg. Morley slammed nine kills and provided five aces, while Burmeister and Fullerton each contributed five kills and three blocks for points. The Cavers had difficulty hitting against the Indians big front line. Skyline Conference LAKEVIEW 15-15, ROGUE RIVER 0-4 � At Rogue River, Lakeview�s Jamie Ruda used a powerful jump serve to record seven straight points in the opener, five consecutive in the second game and was 17 for 17 in the match. Ruda also contributed six kills and 10 digs. The Lakeview front line was sparked by sophomore outside hitter Jess Childress with seven kills. The Honkers were 41-of-42 serving in the match. PHOENIX 15-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 5-2 � At Phoenix, Kelsey Russell, Joni Mahon and Kelly Goodkin combined for 26-of-27 serving with seven aces for Phoenix. In the opening game, Hidden Valley grabbed a 3-0 lead, then Russell served eight straight as the Pirates took command. Phoenix senior outside hitter Sutton Jackson didn�t have many opportunities but made the most of her chances with five kills in seven swings. Phoenix also welcomed the return of sophomore middle Tiffany Ross, who has been slowed with a shoulder injury. Ross had three kills. NORTH VALLEY 16-12-15, ILLINOIS VALLEY 14-15-3 � At Merlin, North Valley rode a consistent performance at the service line by junior Megan Coston, who served the final six points of the third game. Coston was 19-of-19 serving with nine aces in the match. In the decisive third game, North Valley held a 6-3 lead, then went on a 9-0 run. Freshman middle Elaina Renius paced the Knights 12 kills and Whitney Coston added seven. North Valley defensive specialist Nicole Roberts provided 13 digs and sophomore Michelle Beck came up with nine digs. HENLEY 15-15, MAZAMA 3-1 � At Klamath Falls, the Hornets used crisp passing to set up their attack and Alice Meyers controlled the middle in the Skyline opener for both teams. Meyers, a senior middle blocker, posted several blocks early in the first game and finished with four kills as Henley (6-0, 1-0 Skyline) dominated the more inexperienced Vikings. Mazama finished with only one kill for the match.
