Although the undefeated tourney hosts dispatched the Raiders 32-30, 30-16, 30-23, Southern finished second in the nine-team tournament — the school’s best effort in six trips to the FPU meet. The Raiders (3-1) advanced to what amounted to the title tilt by defeating Savannah, Ga. 30-19, 24-30, 30-26, 30-18 earlier in the day. "To go 3-1 against this level of competition gives us a lot of momentum, especially with a relatively young team," Raider coach Paul Elliott said. "Everyone contributed in some way this weekend." Southern Oregon, which was missing two key players — setter Jamie McCreary and hitter Jess Childress — all weekend due to injury, received eight kills apiece from senior Kristin Ferris and freshman Jaclyn Hamilton-Smith against Fresno. Junior Kristen Lilly amassed 21 digs, and setter Melissa Beard had 28 assists. After sweeping second-ranked Biola, Calif. in their tourney opener yesterday to register the program’s biggest upset, SOU hoped to halt a six-match losing skid to perennial powerhouse FPU dating back to 1992. SOU returns to action Wednesday night when it tangles with Oregon at Mac Court.
