A jury convicted James Harry Schreiber, 71, on charges of attempted kidnap and false imprisonment of the girl, who was riding her bicycle last June with two friends when she was approached by the Medford man, according to a report in the Siskiyou Daily News. The girl told police Schreiber grabbed her by the arm and ordered her to get in his car. He told her that she would be safe because he was Santa Claus, police said. The girl told police she screamed and hit Schreiber before he let go of her. Schreiber was arrested later that night by Siskiyou County sheriff’s deputies. According to the Siskiyou Daily News, Schreiber acted as his own attorney during a three-week jury trial. A court-appointed attorney argued Schreiber should be placed on probation because of his age and a history of mental-health issues. A judge disagreed, saying Schreiber was on probation when he was arrested, the newspaper reported. Schreiber will spend three years on parole and be required to register as a sex offender when he is released from prison, according to the newspaper.
